The Sock Monster

The sock monster is a curious beast, and considered by many to be a mere mythical creature.

They are of course wrong; through the years there have been several sightings of this elusive animal, mostly by young children who take to sitting in front of the washing machine to watch the drum go round and round. But of course, being children, no-one listens to them.

It is always remarkable how people are willing to believe in so many things without the slightest shred of evidence, yet when confronted with the fact of one of every pair of socks regularly going missing in the washing machine, people will merely shrug their shoulders, and mutter something vague about them getting stuck in the workings. As though that was somehow less preposterous than the truth. Of course the sock monster is very grateful for this willful ignorance; the current status quo suits its purpose very well indeed.

Why the sock monster only takes one sock of every pair remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of our time. Some suspect that the sock monster simply has a small stomach and only requires one sock per wash to sate its appetite.

However recent research conducted by Sophie and Greg Banks, 5 and 7 years old of Portland Street, Edinburgh, has brought to light that the sock monster may not be eating the socks after all. Instead, these young amateur…
