She had lost count of the number of times she had been in love. That heady rush of emotion that accompanies that moment when you see a spark of something in the person before you, something that calls from their soul to yours.

But as easily as she fell in love, she would fall out of it.

Anything could kick it off — a heated exchange, a stray eye, a forgotten anniversary. Love’s rosy haze would lift and a grey mist would descend, until everything was shrouded in darkness and all was lost.

But just as she thought all hope for love was gone, it would inevitably find her again — and each time felt just like the first, made her feel like a giddy young woman, seeing the world with fresh eyes.

It didn’t take much — a touch, a kindly word, a look in the eyes that reminded her she was beautiful, a reminder of all the wonderful times they had shared before.

Yes, she had fallen in and out of love so many times.

But she had only ever loved one man.
