Not the End of the World
A man and a woman stood on the top of a high rise tower block, overlooking the smoking ruins all around them. The sky was ablaze with a radioactive green light and a dull haze hovered in a heavy cloud over the entire city.
The woman let out a sigh as they looked over at the total and utter destruction.
“Cheer up,” said the man, clapping his hand on his friend’s shoulder. “It’s not the end of the world.”
The woman blinked and did a double take. “Actually, I think you’ll find it is.”
“Well, you know, it could be worse. Plenty more fish in the sea and all that.”
“What are you on about? There are no fish in the sea, they were all poisoned to death by the nuclear fallout!”
“I’m just saying there’s no need to get your knickers in a twist. It’ll all come out in the wash.”
“You’re bloody mad. This is the literal end of the world, and you’re standing here acting like Polly Bloody Anna, pretending like nothing’s happening!”
He shrugged. “Well, what else am I going to do? Stand around being miserable? That’s not going to be much use to anyone is it? Might as well spread a little cheer while I can.”
“Well can you please spread your cheer somewhere else, I’m really not in the mood for it right now.”
