She wasn’t like other girls, they said.

She walked barefoot in the sand. She wasn’t afraid to get dirty. She spoke to woodland creatures. She had a habit of taking showers in lemonade.

She collected hearts, pickled in old jam jars, of all the men who had ever broken hers.
