I love the brutal honesty in this — and for what it’s worth, I don’t think you’re an average writer at all!
I think when you’re constantly being confronted with great writers here on Medium it’s very easy to believe you’re average or even below average (I know I feel this way a LOT). But you have to remember that you’re only seeing the best of the best because they’re the ones who get curated and end up on your homepage. If you compare yourself to Medium as a whole I guarantee you you’re probably up there in the top 20% at least.
I think a lot of writers feel this way — even literary prizewinners at times. There will always be someone better than you, someone who has more insightful opinions, better turns of phrases.
Ultimately the only fair comparison to make is between the writer you were yesterday and the one you are today.
