“Pass the cornflakes would you?”

Still bleary eyed from a rotten night’s sleep, Greg obediently slid the yellow box of knock-off flakes of corn along the bench.

“Cheers,” said Susie, depositing herself in the chair next to his and stifling a yawn. “You having coffee this morning?”

“Please.”

He passed Susie his mug and she poured the black liquid from the cafetiere into his waiting receptacle. Greg took the moment to admire the graceful line of Susie’s neck, the way her satin dressing gown slipped down her shoulders revealing the pale back that ten minutes ago was pressed to his chest in bed. She really was something to look at. Even with the terrible bed-hair and the flecks of sleep that encrusted her eyes.

Beautiful.

Susie, sensing something was wrong, looked up from her coffee and frowned.

“Everything alright Greg?” she asked.

And he realized with a sudden blinding clarity that this was what he wanted to wake up to every morning. He didn’t want to imagine a day when her face wasn’t next to his on the bed to greet him every day with a sleepy “mornin’”, or when she wasn’t there to share a quiet, lazy breakfast as all the world around them raced off to their busy lives.

He smiled, a strange knowing smile that made Susie’s frown deepen. He took a quick swig from his coffee and leaned in to her.

“Marry me?”
