An Introverted Female Traveler’s Guide to Drinking Alone

Last Friday evening I did something I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d do.

I went to the pub by myself.

Alright, it was for all of 30 minutes while I was waiting for a walking tour to start, but still.

You see, I had a few days to spare before I ventured up to Scotland for a two month house sit, and decided that since I was in the area I’d use the time to explore the city of Bath, somewhere I’ve been meaning to visit for a long time. After getting dropped off by my boyfriend, who was driving back home to stay with his family, I ventured off into town.

I’ve always prided myself on being pretty independent, so wandering around a new city during the day doesn’t bother me. Evenings were another matter entirely. I found myself wondering what I was going to do to occupy my time; staying in alone at my Airbnb seemed too depressing to contemplate, so my only option was to go out.

Somehow though, it seems infinitely more acceptable to go out for a drink alone on a weekday night rather than a Friday. Friday nights are reserved for crowds of cheering weekend warriors, stag and hen parties, and students.

So what’s a solo female traveler to do if she doesn’t want to spend her evenings alone in a hotel room?
